What Is A Pressure Cooker And How Does It Work?

A pressure cooker looks somewhat like your average kitchen pot, but it has a lid that locks into place to create a tight seal.  As the liquid inside the pot boils, the steam is trapped inside, raising the pressure inside the pot.

This high pressure inside the pot raises the boiling point of the water to a much higher temperature than what you’d get when boiling a normal pot on the stove as well as forcing liquid and moisture into the food.  This higher boiling point and liquid being forced into the food cooks the food much faster than conventional cooking methods.

pressure cooker Australia best

This process can have you cooking delicious and healthy meals in less than half the time of traditional cooking methods, so it’s the perfect kitchen companion for the average busy Australian family.

How To Use A Pressure Cooker

Regardless of what you’re cooking in your pressure cooker the steps are similar.  Here are the basic steps of using a pressure cooker:

  1. If required, brown your meats first in the pressure cooker.
  2. Add any additional ingredients and the required liquids to create steam during the cooking process.
  3. Securely seal the lid in accordance with your appliance’s instructions.
  4. Once the food is cooked, you will need to release the pressure before opening the lid.
  5. Lastly remove the lid and voila, you have a delicious meal for the family to eat.

A few tips to ensure you cook only the best meals inside your pressure cooker are as follows:

  • Ensure you carefully read your pressure cooker instructions as each model can slightly differ in its functions and features;
  • Don’t overfill your pressure cooker, you need to ensure there is plenty of room for the steam to build up and allow room for your food to expand as it cooks;
  • Ensure you have enough water or liquid stocks for cooking;
  • Pressure cooker safety: Please remember to release the pressure before removing the lid.

Pressure Cooker vs Slow Cooker

It is true that pressure cookers and slow cookers do produce similar results and you can make pretty much make the same meals in both.  However, for busy working families, a pressure cooker is really the only way to go.

For one, whilst a slow cooker cooks your food super slow, a pressure cooker cooks your food super-fast.  This means you can get home from work and decide then what to have for dinner, whereas with a slow cooker you will need to plan the night before.

Apart from how long it takes to cook the food, the main difference between a pressure cooker and a slow cooker, is that a pressure cooker uses steam and pressure to cook food, whilst a slow cooker uses moist heat to cook food. You can check out our best slow cooker guide here.

Finding The Best Pressure Cooker 2024

Types

Stovetop Pressure Cooker

As the name suggests, a stovetop pressure cooker goes on to your stovetop.  It is a reliable and reasonably inexpensive type of pressure cooker. However unlike the electric pressure cookers, a stovetop pressure cooker is a little more hands on.  You’ll need to turn your stove up to its maximum heat whilst the cooker creates pressure as well as know when to turn the stove down to maintain the pressure. There are also induction pressure cookers available for those who have induction hobs.

Most non electric pressure cooker models don’t have a built in timer, so you’ll need to keep watch of the time yourself.

These days it’s rare to find a stovetop pressure cooker on the market as pressure cooker electric options have somewhat taken over. However, I do have a few that I recommend in this guide.

Electric Pressure Cooker

If you prefer to let your appliance do all the cooking, an electric pressure cooker really is the way to go.  Basically, you set it all up and walk away. The pressure cooker will take care of the rest and even let you know when it’s done.  It’s that simple.

Some say that it takes longer to cook food in an electric pressure cooker than it does in a stovetop one, but it’s so minimal it’s really not an issue.

In my view, you can’t compare electric pressure cookers to the stovetop versions.  Whilst an electric pressure cooker can be more expensive than a stovetop version, it’s really the only way to go for busy families. Many electric pressure cookers also have the benefit of working as multi cookers and can be the best multi cooker 2024 Australia option.

Capacity/Size

The best size pressure cooker for the average Australian family would be around 6-8 litres.  This size will ensure you have adequate room to cook most recipes. However, if you are a couple or only have one child, perhaps a 5 litre pressure cooker will suffice. Extra-large families will want to consider something over 8 litres.

There are a few super small electric pressure cooker options, such as a pressure cooker 3 litre capacity or pressure cooker 2 litre capacity, but in my view, this is not worth it due to the limited recipes you can cook in it.

Build

It’s important to purchase a pressure cooker that is of durable quality and built to last.  This might add a bit of expense to your purchase, but you will get a pressure cooker that will last for years and years.

Electric pressure cookers Australia offers will have an insert (the pot that the food is cooked in) which is made from stainless steel or nonstick coating.  Whilst a non stick pressure cooker is great for cleaning, it often doesn’t last the distance and chips away, which makes a stainless steel electric pressure cooker usually the best choice.

Stovetop pressure cookers on the other hand usually come in stainless steel or aluminum.  Both tend to be good choices. However, many report that aluminum is a better heat conductor so the better choice here.

electric pressure cooker with stainless steel insert Australia

For either pressure cooker, it’s also important to ensure it has a good thick base so that the heat is distributed evenly.

Handles

Pressure cookers can be rather heavy, so ensure you look for sturdy yet easy to hold handles.  This is even more important for large sized pressure cookers. Handles should be plastic or plastic coated in order to remain cool to touch.  Some pressure cookers even have handles that fold away for easy storage.

Other Useful Features

Electric pressure cookers can come with a range of bells and whistles, especially if you’re looking for the best multi cooker Australia has. Other features that you may want to consider are things like pressure cookers with high and low pressure settings, multifunctionality so it can make appetisers to desserts, preset timers as well as quick release valves.
