When and Why Might You Need a Breast Pump?
![best breast pump](http://simplerandsmarter.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/best-breast-pump-2.jpg)
As I mentioned in the introduction – there is a range of different reasons and circumstances that mothers of newborn babies may find themselves in need of a breast pump. Short term reasons might be to help mothers with breastfeeding difficulties like too much or not enough milk, while longer term reasons may be due to an early return to work or in cases where babies refuse the breast.
Here are some common situations where breastfeeding mothers find a breast pump helpful:
- A common problem with new mothers is having too much milk. This problem leads to engorged breasts which results in painful breasts. Being able to express milk helps relieve pain.
- On the other hand, some women have difficulties in keeping a good milk flow, and so expressing milk between breastfeeding helps to increase the supply.
- If a baby is born prematurely or is ill and needs to remain in the hospital, the mother may need to express to continue her milk supply or have milk available to her baby in her absence.
- A mother may express milk to keep in the fridge for emergencies.
- When a mother returns to work she may need to express milk during the day to keep up her milk supply or have milk available to her baby while being cared for by others.
Choosing The Best Breast Pump 2024
Whatever the reason you’re looking to buy breast pump, take some time to consider the reason as this can impact which breast pump is right for you.
If you’re going to be expressing milk for many months and multiple times per day, then the best double breast pump is going to be worth the investment. While if you only need to express milk every now and again, then a single cheap electric breast pump may be just fine or a manual breast pump.
Below I’ve outlined various different factors to consider to ensure you purchase the right breast pump for your situation.
Types of Breast Pump
When it comes to breast pumps, the main options to choose from are either manual or electric and single or double. I discuss these options and the pros and cons of each option below.
Manual Breast Pumps
The cheapest type of breast pump you can purchase is a manual breast pump. This type of pump requires the user to continually squeeze the handle over and over again to create suction and to encourage milk flow.
The benefit to a manual breast pump is that it is much cheaper than an electric pump as well as being quieter – which makes it more discrete to use. Also given there is no power source, it is very portable.
Obviously the downside of a manual breast pump is that it requires you to continually squeeze it over and over to work, which is not ideal if you’re using the pump multiple times a day and over weeks and weeks or even months. It also takes much longer to express milk with a manual pump then it does with an electric pump.
![best breast pump](http://simplerandsmarter.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/best-breast-pump-3.jpg)
Electric Breast Pumps
The benefit of an electric pump, of course, is that the machine does all the work. The pump has a built in motor which means there is no requirement for the user to pump it by hand. Usually an electric pump comes with a range of different settings which allows the user to change the suction level and speed depending upon their requirements.
For mothers who need a strong level of suction, there is the option of a hospital grade breast pump. These pumps have a much stronger suction and a more durable motor than a standard electric pump. Basically a hospital grade breast pump is the very best electric breast pump you can get. These are large pumps used in hospitals and are available to be hired.
Of course electric breast pumps are much more expensive than manual pumps. They are also noisier and require a little more storage space. However if you can afford an electric pump it is well worth the investment.
Single Or Double Pump?
Electric breast pumps also come in the option of either a single pump or a double pump, so you can express milk from both breasts at the same time. Read any double breast pump reviews and you’ll see mothers raving about what a great time saver they are. This is great for those mothers who need to express milk often or even for mothers of multiples.
As well as saving time, it’s said that expressing both breasts at the same time actually increases milk supply by around 18%. So not only are you saving time, but you’re also ensuring you have a great supply of milk.
If you’re only planning to express milk on the odd occasion, then a single pump will work just fine. However if you’re going to be expressing milk multiple times a day for weeks on end, then it will be well worth the investment to purchase a double electric pump.
Size / Portability
![best breast pump](http://simplerandsmarter.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/best-breast-pump-4.jpg)
If you plan on using the breast pump outside of the home, then you’ll want to give consideration to the size and overall portability of the breast pump. For example, if you intend to take it to work with you each day, you’re going to want something that packs up nice and compactly.
For the best portable breast pump, look to buy electric breast pump with a built in battery pack so you’re not limited to where you can sit to express milk.
Ease Of Use
Most breast pumps are relatively easy to use, but on the other hand, some can also be overly complicated. To ensure the breast pump you intend to purchase is easy to use, read other breast pump reviews and see what others are saying in terms of how easy the device is to use.
You can usually gauge how easy to use a breast pump is likely to be by the number of buttons and settings it has. While a few different buttons and settings are helpful, too many just creates frustration and confusion. On electric breast pumps, clear to read LCD screens are also helpful.
It’s also recommended to look for breast pumps that are easy to take apart for cleaning. Some parts of your breast pump may even be dishwasher safe which makes them super easy to clean.
Comfort
We’ve briefly talked about adjustable settings above, such as speed and suction strength. These adjustable settings help to ensure you’re comfortable and that your milk flows easily.
However in addition to settings, for maximum comfort and to ensure the device works correctly, you’ll need a breast shield that is the right size for your nipple. To work effectively, the breast shield needs to stimulate the correct area of the nipple, and this won’t happen if the breast shield is too small or too big.
Most breast pumps come with a one size fits all breast shield. However, some come with a range of different sizes and even if they don’t, often different sizes can be purchased separately. So if you do suspect your breast pump shield is too big or too small, look to see if you can find another size that is compatible with your pump.
![best breast pump](http://simplerandsmarter.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/best-breast-pump-5.jpg)
Additional Accessories
There is a range of different accessories available to be purchased to complement your breast pump. At the very least you will need to purchase BPA free storage bags and feeding bottles and a bottle brush for cleaning the breast shield and bottles.
A travel bag is also a great accessory to have so you have something not only to transport the breast pump in but also to store all the parts away in when not in use.
Some breast pumps come with various accessories and some come with the bare minimum. Don’t be dazzled by breast pumps that come with multiple accessories as some you may not even need. Most essentials that you do need can be purchased separately rather cheaply.

Haakaa Silicone Breastfeeding Manual Breast Pump Review
Rating: 4.5
Specifications:
- Type: Manual
- Pump: Single
- Weight: 0.07kg
Last but not least, another good cheap manual breast pump for the very odd occasion is the Haakaa manual breast pump. This breast pump makes a good backup system or some mothers even use it while expressing milk, to catch milk from the other breast.
There is not much to the Haakaa – it’s simply one piece of silicone. To use it, you simply squeeze the main body of the pump, then place the cup over your nipple. Once in position, you release the squeeze on the pump and the milk should slowly start to flow. Then just repeat this process over and over as required.
This pump is certainly not designed to be used on a regular basis, rather it’s a great option for throwing in your bag “just in case” or as mentioned above for those women who find milk flowing from their other breast while using a single breast pump.
Benefits:
- Very simple to use
- One piece design
- Ideal second pump
Drawbacks:
- Very basic
