As I mentioned in the introduction – there is a range of different reasons and circumstances that mothers of newborn babies may find themselves in need of a breast pump. Short term reasons might be to help mothers with breastfeeding difficulties like too much or not enough milk, while longer term reasons may be due to an early return to work or in cases where babies refuse the breast.
Here are some common situations where breastfeeding mothers find a breast pump helpful:
- A common problem with new mothers is having too much milk. This problem leads to engorged breasts which results in painful breasts. Being able to express milk helps relieve pain.
- On the other hand, some women have difficulties in keeping a good milk flow, and so expressing milk between breastfeeding helps to increase the supply.
- If a baby is born prematurely or is ill and needs to remain in the hospital, the mother may need to express to continue her milk supply or have milk available to her baby in her absence.

The cheapest type of breast pump you can purchase is a manual breast pump. This type of pump requires the user to continually squeeze the handle over and over again to create suction and to encourage milk flow.

The benefit of an electric pump, of course, is that the machine does all the work. The pump has a built in motor which means there is no requirement for the user to pump it by hand. Usually an electric pump comes with a range of different settings which allows the user to change the suction level and speed depending upon their requirements.
For mothers who need a strong level of suction, there is the option of a hospital grade breast pump. These pumps have a much stronger suction and a more durable motor than a standard electric pump. Basically a hospital grade breast pump is the very best electric breast pump you can get. These are large pumps used in hospitals and are available to be hired.
Of course electric breast pumps are much more expensive than manual pumps. They are also noisier and require a little more storage space. However if you can afford an electric pump it is well worth the investment.
Single Or Double Pump?
